Description:
A very impressive architectural and interior design is boldly stated in the development of the aquarium feature for the Vantage Point Waterfront building in Wichita Kansas. The aquarium provides a very entertaining but also calming environment in the building’s lobby.
We at ICM have attempted to create an environment within the aquarium which realistically depicts a slice of the tropical waters of the Caribbean Seas. This slice of a tropical sea is being developed within the parameters of a 22 foot long by 8 foot high and 6 foot deep exhibit tank.
The aquarium has been developed to support a relatively large and diverse population of colorful aquatic life which should enable the visitors and employees to enjoy for many years. A full list of suggested species has been developed to insure compatibility as well as color and movement within the aquarium exhibit. Care has been taken in the development of the reef to not only represent an authentic Caribbean Reef but also created to provide opportunities for the species of fish to develop “homes” and safe territories. Another consideration of the design of this particular artificial reef is the continued maintenance of the aquarium that must be done on a regular basis. The reef must not be overbearing or designed in a manner that a diver cannot access the aquarium or an aquarist cannot clean or feed from above the exhibit if necessary.
The construction of the coral reef and artificial coral is done through the use of synthetic materials (polyester resins, urethanes, etc) that can withstand constant saltwater immersion and will not corrode, lose their natural color or become toxic to the inhabitants of the reef. We have developed a specification on the recommended materials and type of construction that will be utilized in the building of the artificial reefs. We have also provided a colored rendering, both plan and elevation, of the proposed layout and suggested placement of the interior coral and reefs.
We have developed an overhead array of lighting utilizing state-of- the-art lighting fixtures that will enhance both the mood of the exhibit from day to night and as well provide a healthy source of UV light for the species within the exhibit aquarium. The lighting is designed to operate on a timer, but can be overridden if necessary. It is important that the lighting is periodically checked for burned out bulbs and changed per manufacturing recommendations to provide a healthy environment.
The system is a state-of-the-art AFS that incorporates the newest available computer monitoring system for increased control. The system and set parameters can be monitored via internet connection from anywhere in the world.
Fail safe alarms have 7 pre-set recordings that when activated call a specified number and leave recordings.
Designed and supplied inline with ICM was Aquatics by Design.
ICM has developed a simple line schematic and recommended both the equipment and type of equipment that is recommended for a commercial aquarium of this size and nature. We have also provided the water parameters that must be met for the aquarium to be maintained successfully year after year. As important as the design or recommendation of equipment, is the proper layout of all of the equipment for continued maintenance of the aquarium. For this reason, ICM has provided a simple layout and recommendation of both the size of the Filtration and Curator Room(s). Care must be exercised when laying out not only the equipment but also water, power and drainage requirements. In addition a provision must be made for the proper electrical junction boxes as well as HVAC for the proper and safe continuous operation of all AFS equipment.
The aquarium has been designed using only the most current and up to date innovative materials that can withstand the harsh conditions and substantial loads being placed on the construction material by the saltwater environment. |
