Unique aquarium functions as both a window in the home's living room and a wall in the outdoor swimming pool.
The owner of this private residence wanted an aquarium that was truly unique, serving as the focal point of their lower-level family room – and a spectacular wall for their pool. No small feat by any design standards: the house is located several hundred feet from the coast of Orange County, California, on a man-made sand bar. A design/build firm known for executing the impossible, ICM rose to the challenge, working closely with Pure Water Pools, the pool manufacturer, to resolve excavation concerns for the pool and the basement. We also worked with Long Beach architect Michael Kollin and Newport Beach designer Kit LaScala to ensure the resulting aquarium would perfectly complement the interiors of this luxury weekend retreat.
The resulting 16-foot aquarium more than hits the mark on all fronts. While the aquarium's acrylic window provides an exciting view of both the pool and the ocean beyond, the large structure also withstands increased pressure from the pool side water level and no pressure from the family room side. The AFS room, located adjacent to the aquarium and designed specifically with ease of access in mind, keeps the aquarium – and this homeowner's vision – crystal clear.
